The malachite top, carefully veneered to create a quasi-symmetrical pattern emanating from the center of the table, indicates by its deep green coloring and dense, knotty configuration that it is of the finest quality malachite mined in the Russian Ural Mountains. It is very similar to the malachite tops gifted by Russia to the Duke of Wellington now on display at Apsley House, London.

The wonderful gilt metal (ormolu) base is of extremely rare design incorporating faceted malachite tablets of varying form in an almost Tudor Revival strap-work type support. The base was probably designed and made in Paris to carry the top, which would have been brought from Russia.
