(American, 1846–1888)
Floral Still Life
Circa 1888
Oil on canvas, 18 x 22 inches

Although she was originally from Boston, Elizabeth Lyman Boott spent much of her life in Italy. In 1879, she traveled to Munich to study with the popular American artist Frank Duveneck (1848–1919), with whom she began a lengthy romance. After convincing Duveneck to continue his teaching in Italy, she and many of her friends traveled there to study under him. Lizzie Boott and Frank Duveneck were married in 1886.

Duveneck’s influence is clear in this wonderful still life, which was probably painted in Italy during the last year of Lizzie Duveneck’s life; she died of pneumonia in March 1888 at the age of 42. The painting is presented in its original frame and bears an exhibition label suggesting it was included in a memorial show
of her work.
