Serab Runner
Northwest Persia, circa 1885
3'8" x 21'7"
Courtesy of Oriental Rugs Ltd

Serab carpets are known for their warm, inviting appearance and runner format. This example is expansive in size and retains the full outer borders, which are often cut down to fit contemporary spaces. The borders of this Serab are decorated with a larger than normal number of small playful animals and birds. It has bold, articulate designs that create a dynamic impression, particularly when coupled with the unusual range of colors used here: teal blue, yellow, and a lovely coral red on the camel-colored ground, rather than the darker shades often associated with Serabs. The condition is remarkably good with restoration limited to minor damage rather than wear. This piece is a visual delight.
