Paint-Decorated Tall Case Clock
Riley Whiting (active first quarter of 19th century)
Winchester, Conn., circa 1815
H. 88"
Courtesy of Allan Katz Americana

This exceptional paint-decorated clock retains its original wooden movement inside a pine case and is in extraordinary condition overall. The movement includes hours, minutes, seconds, and a calendar. The quarter columns on the case enhance the visual presentation.

An example with a similar painted case but with works by Silas Hoadley sold at the Howard and Jean Lipman sale at Sotheby's in 1981. Hoadley was active in Plymouth, Connecticut, during the same period that Whiting worked in nearby Winchester. The similar paint decoration of these two clocks could indicate that a talented casemaker worked with both Whiting and Hoadley.
