The Wing Family Canvaswork Embroidery. Sandwich, MA. Late 17th to early 18th century. Silk and wool on canvas linen; eastern white pine backboard. 16 1/4 x 22 3/4 in. Courtesy of Steven and Carol Huber.
Early New England needlework is seldom found, especially in such pristine condition; this piece even retains the original backboard with remnants of the original ribbon border. The needlework was made by a member of the Wing family of Sandwich, Massachusetts, settlers on Cape Cod in 1637. The needlework was handed down and remained in the family until recently. The motifs are based on 17th-century English designs taken from pattern books used for needlework and painting. It is possibly the only known American needlework of this design and early period.
