We have recently purchased a Dutch painting depicting a stranded whale on the beach of Katwijk. The painting records a rare occurrence in the Netherlands and the spectacle that ensued, drawing the attention of curious onlookers as well as artists such as Beelt. The painting is in excellent condition.

Prior to our rediscovery of the painting in the Netherlands, its location was last known in the 1920s, when it was in the private collection of Dr. A. E. Bye of Philadelphia. A vintage photo of the painting was published on page 30 of Kunstler um Jan van Goyen, by Hans-Ulrich Beck (Augsburg, Germany, 1991).
