Unterberger’s best-known works are views of Venice and Naples depicted under a romantic haze. The present view depicts a hot, late afternoon along the historical Riva degli Schiavoni, once the most popular promenade in Venice. Elegantly dressed Venetians stroll casually along, while playing children, barking dogs, and a bustling row of vendors add life, color, and movement to an otherwise lazy time of day.
Unterberger was born in Innsbruck, Austria, in 1838, and studied in Munich and Dusseldorf. He made his first trip to Italy in 1858, when he spent a number of months in Milan. In 1864, he established himself in Brussels, where he made the Venetian landscape the focal point of his artistic output. It was during this period that his sparkling views of Italy began to be exhibited internationally.
