Willard Metcalf (1858–1925) was one of America’s premier landscape painters. His impact on the Lyme art colony, “America’s center of impressionism,” has, up until now, never been extensively chronicled. This exhibition features more than forty plein-air paintings from the Griswold Museum, lending institutions, and private collections. Also featured are a diary, sketchbooks, and Metcalf’s naturalist collection, which includes meticulously labeled bird eggs and nests, moths, and butterflies.
