The Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts (MESDA) and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, N.C., are offering a graduate summer program that will focus on southern history and decorative arts before 1820; primarily on the material culture of the Carolina Low Country, which includes the coastal areas of South Carolina and Georgia. The curriculum will feature lectures, discussions, workshops, artifact studies, research projects, as well as a weeklong study trip. Topics will include historical archaeology, artifact analysis, connoisseurship, research methods, conservation principles, and social and economic history. The Institute is designed for graduate students and museum personnel interested in American history and material culture, but anyone associated with the fields of American art, museum studies, interior design, historic preservation, public history, or related fields are also encouraged to apply.
