Widely celebrated for his iconic portraits, Irving Penn (born 1917) has experimented extensively with platinum/palladium printing since the early 1960s, transforming some of his best-known photographs for Vogue and other publications with remarkably rich tonal ranges and luxurious textures. Given to the National Museum of Art by Penn, these 85 platinum/palladium prints and 17 collages are presented together for the first time. Spanning most of Penns innovative career from the 1940s to the late 1980s, they represent all of Penns genres; fashion photography (many of his favorite model, his wife,
Lisa Fonssagrives-Penn), portraits of the 20th centurys most celebrated figuresPicasso, Duchamp, Coletteand ethnographic studies. |
