Summer Day, Portland Harbor
Alfred Thompson Bircher (1837-1908)
Oil on canvas
18-1/8 x 39-1/8 inches
Signed lower left: A.T. Bricher
Courtesy MME Fine Art, LLC, New York

Bricher was born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and spent his early career in New England. Although largely self-taught, he painted with the artistic luminaries of his time. When working in the White Mountains he was alongside Benjamin Champney and Alfred Bierstadt, among others; and while in his studio in Boston, with artists such as Fitz Henry Lane and Martin Johnson Heade.

Bricher is perhaps best known for his paintings of the New England coast, where with ability equal to these artists, he recorded the crashing of waves or quiet inlet scenes such as those of Summer Day. This image is a quintessential example of one of Bricher's favorite subjects, the coast of Maine. The painting is in pristine condition and the frame is of the period.
