By Colin B. Bailey, Scala Publishers,
128 pp., illus., hardcover, $24.95, soft, $14.95

Chief curator Colin Bailey documents the construction of the Gilded Age mansion that houses the museum, and examines how its creation influenced Frick's taste during the final years of his life. Newly discovered letters and telegrams reveal the extent of Frick's passionate involvement in the project, as well as the roles played by the various dealers, architects, decorators, and fellow collectors who advised him. Frick's acquisition of the finest objects from J. Pierpont Morgan's estate -- Limoges enamels, Renaissance bronzes, and eighteenth-century French furniture -- established the various specializations for which the Frick Collection has been known since it opened to the public in 1935.

The Frick Collection has announced plans to establish a Center for the History of Collecting in America, to be located at the Frick Art Reference Library in New York.

The Frick's objectives are to bring together scholars in the field; host frequent symposia and colloquia; develop fellowship programs; and eventually offer an established scholar a full-year of support for postdoctoral research in this field.
