Alexander Ferdinand Wust

(1837-1876) Landscape painter Alexander Wust was born in Dordrecht, the Netherlands, and came to American in the late 1850s. He was in New York City from 1858 until at least 1869, exhibiting frequently at the National Academy, as well as at the Brooklyn Art Association and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. He painted in the Adirondacks and throughout New England. In the White Mountains he painted views of Lake Winnepesaukee and Mount Washington, including a monumental work over seven feet wide in the style of the vast panoramic views of the West and South America popular with artists like Church and Bierstadt. In his attention to detail and his depiction of the grandeur nature, Wust's work shares certain characteristics with Hudson River School painting. Yet it also retains a distinctly European sensibility in its crisp handling of light, virtuosic rendering of geographic features, an acute observation of human activity, and the ability to incorporate these elements in a balanced composition. Wust died in Antwerp, Belgium in 1876.
