H. Raymond Henry was born in Woodson, Illinois on March 21, 1882. Henry was raised in the Midwest and apprenticed to a draftsman while in his teens. At the turn of the century he began his formal art training at the Art Institute of Chicago and at St. Louis Academy. He had further training under John C. Johansen at Saugatuck, Michigan. Henry then had a studio in New York City until 1910 when he moved to Southern California and first exhibited in Los Angeles. The 1920's were spent in San Juan Capistrano where he maintained a studio in an old adobe. After moving to Hollywood in 1929, Henry worked as an art critic for the Hollywood Citizens News. In the Mid 1940's he moved to a home in Three Arch Bay south of Laguna Beach and continued to paint until his eyesight failed in the mid 1960's. Using a rich palette of blues, reds and lavenders, Henry painted poetic landscapes of Southern California. Henry moved to Costa Mesa shortly before his death on May 16, 1974.
