Landscape and figure painter. He was a native of Hammerston, England and came to the United States in 1858. In 1859, while living in Brooklyn, New York he belonged to the early art community which included, Regis Gignoux, William Hart and his brother James M. Hart. Studied with Philp Philips, Louis Haag, Stanfield. His work as a scene painter at the Drury Lane theater, Surrey Theater lasted for 8 years.
