Hattie Saussy

Born in Savannah, Hattie Saussy studied art as a youth with Lila Cabiness and Emma Cheves Wilkins, both noted local artists. She attended Mary Baldwin College in Virginia, and then moved with her mother to New York City to continue her art training at the National Academy of Design, Parsons School, and the Art Students League. She spent 1913 and 1914 in Europe, studying in Paris and then traveling in Luxembourg, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, and Italy before World War I. Returning to America, she spent time in New York, Washington, and Chatham, Virginia, where she taught at Chatham Hall from 1920 to 1921. Saussy then returned to Savannah, where she lived and worked for over five decades, creating evocative portraits in Impressionist views of the lowcountry. A true regionalist, she also traveled to paint landscapes in the north Georgia mountains, North and South Carolina, and New Orleans.
