James Hamilton Shegogue

A native of Charleston, South Carolina, James Hamilton Shegogue traveled and received artistic training in Europe as a youth. During his lengthy professional career, spent mainly in New York, he produced portraits, landscapes, historical and genre paintings. Shegogue exhibited at the American Academy in 1833 and was an associate of the National Academy of Design from 1834 until 1861. His paintings are held in such prestigious collections as the City of New York, the New-York Historical Society and the Brooklyn Museum.
