Eugene White first studied at the Ft. Wayne School of Art and later in Sarasota at the Ringling School of Art. He resided in Sarasota for the rest of his life until his death in 1966. White was a member of the Salmagundi Club, Florida Federation of Art, and the Sarasota Artist Association. His works are in the Toledo Art Museum, Ringling Museum, and in the Chrysler Motors collection.
The Scene depicted in Church Revival is rendered in a compassionate and understanding manner. Dressed in the symbolic purity of virginal white, mothers are preparing their children for entry into the body of the church. The central figure, however, is not one of the infants but instead a black mature female flanked on her left by another mature black female acting as an attendant. White has chosen to complete the facial expression only of these two figures. Sensitive to religious subjects, White completed a series of works celebrating the southern black worship and literal response to the Holy Word.
