Geo. C. Birlant & Co. has been making the famous and authentic Charleston Battery Bench for more than 50 years. The heavy cast iron sides are still made from the old molds (circa 1880). The wooden slats are durable South Carolina cypress. The bench is sold all over America through magazine advertising, and at Geo. C. Birlant & Co., located in the heart of Charleston's antiques district in a very large three-story building which was built around 1850.
Own a piece of history with an Authentic reproduction Charleston Battery Bench. This beautiful handcrafted bench has been a part of the scenes on The Battery and the City of Charleston since the late 1800's. Add a sense of history and elegance to your gardens, lawns, patio, and indoor atriums with this comfortable bench. It also makes a nice addition to parks, playgrounds, shopping malls, golf courses and other public areas.
Don't be fooled by Cheap Imitations! Look for the Birlant name on every casting to insure quality and authenticity. The durable South Carolina cypress slats are sanded and carefully inspected before being hand-dipped painted. The heavy weight cast iron sides are made from the original molds. We use only the finest outdoor industrial enamel paint in the traditional Charleston dark green, and stainless steel nuts and bolts.
The History Behind Our Bench After carefully researching many old photographs and records of the City of Charleston and its historic Battery, we determined that the first use of a Charleston Battery Bench was during the latter part of the 19th century and was made by the J. F. Riley Iron Works in Charleston. Mr. Birlant, founder of Geo. C. Birlant & Co. purchased the original bench mold pattern and the exclusive rights to produce the bench from the Riley Iron Works when they ceased operations over sixty years ago. Please notice the beautiful design of the casting which includes some of the fauna and flora indigenous to South Carolina during the 1800's. Included in the design is an inverted parrot, fox and hound, and a foliate motif overall, indicative of the sporting life and wildlife in the Lowcountry.
