Antique Agra carpet, 19th Century - This could well be the most magnificent antique Indo-Persian carpet that has come down to us. Modeled carefully on Kerman animal carpets of the seventeenth century, it comes particularly close to the famous Stieglitz Carpet in the Hermitage Collection in St. Petersburg. In true Kerman tradition, the rich red ground displays a paradise scene with cypresses and other flowering trees, in which majestically striding muscular lions and wily wolves stalk an array of deer and other animals. The drawing of this carpet is exceptional, as is the depth, saturation, and range of the color. The magnificent strap work arabesque border also captures all the complexity and monumentality of the best classical Persian carpets. One may fairly say that no other Indian rug of the nineteenth century has managed so well to bring to life the artistic and technical virtuosity of the classical past.
