Portrait of a little girl with a kitten by Elizabeth Cambridge Harbutt (f. 1883-1895). The watercolor on ivory portrait depicts the girl seated on a stool in a garden, holding her knitting and watching a kitten playing with a ball of red wool. She is wearing a white smock, apricot colored dress, gray tights, and matching shoes. Signed to the obverse, “BC Harbutt/1891”. Wood frame. Rectangular, 12 cms. X 5 1/2 cms. (4 3/4 inches 2 1/2 inches) With frame, 19 cms. X 13 cms. (7 3/4 inches X 5 1/2 inches). Excellent conditon. Provanance: by descent trhough the artists family. Elizabeth Harbutt (fl. 1883 – 1895). Elizabeth Harbutt of Bath (also known as Mrs. B. Cambridge) exhibited at the Royal Academy, and other institutions between 1883 – 1895. Her miniatures included portrats of Noel Cambridge Harbutt, Owen Cambridge Harbut, and Isaac Pitman, Esq, the inventor of photography.
