Hugues Merle 1823 - 1881 "The Treasured Gift (Pandoras Box)" Oil on canvas, Unframed: 46 x 35 3/4, Signed and dated 1887in the original period 19th century frame, in perfect condition with no restoration. Hugues Merle was much acclaimed during his own life-time for his highly finished depictions of family life, historical subjects and the pathos experienced in the lives of the less fortunate French-notably working women. Merle was most often associated with his friend and rival, William Bouguereau. Merle and Bouguereau found lucrative employment with Goupil, and Merle went on to teach Elizabeth Gardner, Bouguereau's wife..
