Henry Boese is known for his early Hudson River landscapes, and portraits. "Hudson River Vista", an exquisite example of romantic landscape painting, light becomes the most apparent contrast in the painting. A very strong contrast exists between the foreground, the central area and the background; the intense shadow cast by the trees over the group of people and the highlights on the rock outcropping. While the brighter and clearer color water in the background succeeds in drawing the viewer's eye into the painting. In 1863, he showed the painting "Scene on the Mohawk". at the National Academy of Design
