Exceptional pair of federal brass columnar andirons, with ball finial above a column resting on arched cabriole legs with outer and inner spurs and ending in slipper feet. A rare form of andiron, more typically seen with urn finials, undoubtedly from the workshop if Richard Whittingham, although unsigned. The finial detail, in larger profile, is generally seen on signed Whittingham andirons with conical or hexagonal supports and ball feet. This is a rare and very successful variation. Attributed to Richard Wittingham, New York, circa 1790. 26 1/2" high. Minor repairs at leg joints.
