Cedar Swamps, Cape May County, New Jersey, oil on canvas, 31.25 x 46.25 inches.

In the 1850s, the swampy area around Dennisville in Cape May County, New Jersey was noted for an unusual industry called cedar mining. Huge cedar trees that were felled by age or storms sank deep into the peat and were found buried at various depths. The submerged logs-some estimated to be over a thousand years old-were quite sound and well preserved. Shingles made from these logs were in high demand among builders in South Jersey and Philadelphia, where the roof of Independence Hall was re-shingled with cedar mined from Cape May County.
