portsmouth federal hepplewhite chest Very fine hepplewhite inlaid figured mahogany swell-front chest, with four graduated beaded drawers with bookmatched crotch mahogany veneered fronts, raised on flaring french feet with a shaped apron below inlaid maple crossbanding. Original hardware, old shellac finish. Portsmouth, New Hampshire, circa 1795-1800. Details of this chest warrant a strong attribution to Langley Boardman and/or Ebenezer Lord, who worked in Portsmouth in the early 19th century. Please refer to the secretary bookcase illustrated as plate 34, pp. 182-5, Jobe, Portsmouth Furniture, for comparison. The identical details include the use of restrained but excellent figured crotch veneers in a cascading bookmatched design on the drawer fronts, and on the front edge of the top and apron. Both pieces also have the identical tiger maple inlay separating the case from the base, and have identically shaped apron and feet.
