Pear shaped vases with tapering upwards to a narrow, cylindrical neck terminating in a small circular mouth with a slightly everted rim, the base rests in on small, inverted hand cut foot which has been left unglazed for firing. The pair of vases are vividly decorated with celadon incorporating underglaze blue and red depicting similar scenes with a prominent single pine tree issuing from lingzhi studded rockwork, rolling clouds and flying cranes whose antics attract the curiosity of the playful deer beneath them. Two Buddhistic symbols are painted on the neck and the recessed well of the foot has two underglaze blue concentric circles. The presence of anyone of the depicted features of the vase would connote a wish for long life; the inclusion of so many, the deer, the crane, the evergreen, and the lingzhi forms a powerful rhebus with a dedicated wish for longevity. This pair of beautifully glazed and excellently painted vases would have been presented as a gift perhaps on the occasion of an important birthday with the wish for continued long life.
