A fine and rare sailor-made Whalebone mounted mahogany four-tiered spool stand, probably made in Nantucket circa 1850. The overall height is 8 1/4". Provenance: Smithsonian Institute, The Museum of American Folk Art, Sotheby's "The Barbara Johnson Whaling Collection." Illustrated in the following books: Scrimshaw and Scrimshanders by Flayderman published in 1972, and Scrimshaw, the Whaler's Legacy, published by Schiffer in 1993.
