Made in 1793, the sampler reads "Joanna Maxwell/born May the 8/AD 1782 at Warren/Wrought at/ Warren/ September/ the 12 A D 1723." Joanna worked an acrostic verse (the first letters of each line spelling out her name vertically), and lived in her grandfather Reverend Samuel Maxwell's mansion with her parents. She died unmarried. The house is now owned by the Warren Historical Society. Silk on linen, sight size.
