Pennsylvania Trade Sign, Lancaster County, PA, early 19th c., Poplar and walnut with early polychromed finish. 63 x 64 inches.

This rare, early double-sided sign was first offered in 1934 by Joe Kindig, Jr. and had been used as a sign for the Temperance Inn in Fairfield, PA. It was later sold by John Walton, Inc. in 1976. The phrase 'Liberty Commerce and Agriculture' most likely comes from the writings of Thomas Jefferson and may indicate an original use of the sign for a trade or fraternal organization.
