A very rare, possibly unique, French Empire ormolu mantel clock depicting the kidnapping from Baden and subsequent murder in March 1804 at the castle of Vincennes of Louis-Antoine-Henri Bourbon-Conde Duc d'Enghein at the orders of Napoleon, who feared a Royalist plot.
Enghein's faithful dog Mohiloff (a gift from the Tsar), is present, as is either Hulin, the plot's instigator, or Harel, the Governor of Vincennes, as the cartoon figure in the doorway. The figure to the right is a concept, probably 'France', perhaps 'Liberte' or even 'Hebe'.
Eight-day silk suspension movement. Circa 1805. Height 19.5 inches.
