James Duffield Harding was born in Deptford near London. He was the son of an artist and showed a precocious talent from a very young age. He went to London to study painting with Prout and engraving with John Pye at the age of 15. in 1818 he won a medal at the Society of Arts. He was a landscape and topographical painter. He exhibited in London from 1811-64; at the Royal Academy from 1811-58; also at the British Institution, Society of British Artists, Suffolk Street and the Old Watercolour Society. He published many books on teaching drawing. Ruskin, who was one of his pupils, said of him that he was, after Turner, 'unquestionably' one of the greatest masters of foliage in Europe. He visited Italy in 1824 and went frequently to the Continent after that date and exhibited in Paris from 1855. He also visited Verona, Venice and Mantua with Ruskin in 1845. His illustrations in the Landscape Annual made him one of the best known artists of his day. Works by this artist are in museums in Dublin, Edinburgh, Glasgow and the Victoria and Albert in London and many others.
