Inscribed:
'Success to British Arms in America'

London, c.1760

This inscription probably relates to the French/Indian wars of the late 1750s when France and Britain were trying to establish their own colonies in North America. The war culminated at the Battle of Quebec in 1759 where General Wolfe masterfully outmanoeuvred the French by scaling the 'Heights of Abraham' but lost his life in the process. As a result of this battle the French no longer had a power base in North America. Canada was ceded to Great Britain in 1763.
