This is a rare and early mask from the Congo. Such tribal expressions were profoundly influential in the work of modern artists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries who were in search of inspiration. The connection between modern and tribal art is perhaps strongest with the work of Picasso. His cubist masterpiece Les Demoiselles d'Avignon (1907) includes Congo masks of similar design.
