This high style tall case clock is an exceedingly rare example produced in New York City. Only a handful of clockmakers produced any tall case clocks in the city and this clock is one of a small group to survive. The hood features a molded pagoda top inlaid with a spreading eagle and a mariners star. This motif is commonly found on Embree's tall case clocks. The painted dial has floral spandrels and is signed in blocked letters with the maker and locale "EFFINGHAM EMBREE / NEW YORK". The high style Hepplewhite case has fine geometric and fan inlays with richly grained mahogany panels. The case rests on a distinctive cut-out bracket foot that is also found on these Embree cases. The clock has a provenance from the Harold C. Bailey of Hartford, CT collection and is illustrated in The American Collector November 25, 1938.
