IMPORTANT CHIPPENDALE CARVED AND FIGURED MAHOGANY BLOCK-FRONT CHEST-ON-CHEST Salem, Mass. circa 1765.

In two parts; The upper section with a swan's neck pediment surmounted by three urn-and-flame finials, the scrollboard fitted with three short drawers, the center one fan carved, above four graduated long drawers. The lower section with a mid-molding above four graduated and blocked drawers, the fan-shaped pendant below on blocked ogee bracket feet. Original finials and cast brass hardware. Warm golden patina.All original except for some customary minor repairs.

This chest-on-chest was owned by the pioneering American furniture collector Charles Milton Davenport (1871-1943), of Boston, Mass. Davenport was born in Leyden, Mass. 1871, and died in Boston in 1943. After graduating from Williams College in 1901, he attended Harvard University Law School, and established a successful law practice in Boston, where he also achieved prominence as a public official.
