According to family history this potrait was painted in Virginia is 1833. The artist was originally commissioned to paint the sister of the sitter and he had begun the preliminary work on her portrait. However, she passed away and the boy's portrait was painted instead. You can still discern the bonnet and larger sleeves that were part of his sister's portrait, but painted over with depiction of the son. Oil on canvas, 30 x 25 inches. Unsigned.
