New England Bedstead found in Newburyport, Massachusetts
Early Summer 2009
Rugs & Tapestries
Completely original with mortised joints, the late eighteenth-century to early-nineteenth-century double bed was topped by an early “husband” bed rest, a rare example with ratchet back adjustment that has been newly reupholstered in watermelon calamanco. Behind the bed hangs an eighteenth-century whole cloth wool coverlet with naturalistic reapplied American crewel work depicting insects, snails and salamanders.
