A Parian Figure -- Venus

This elegant parian figure of Venus is after the work of John Gibson. The event of Venus receiving the golden apple was most celebrated as it was depicted by several sculptors including Thorwaldsen. In mythology, Eris contrived to throw the gods and goddesses into turmoil offering a golden apple inscribed: Let it be given to the fairest. In contention for the prize were Juno, Minerva, and Venus. Paris awarded the golden apple to Venus.
