Era: 19th Century

Annie Blinkhorn worked her sampler at the Royal British Girls' School in Southampton. These schools were established throughout England to care for and educate young girls. Here, Annie practiced her delightful sampler with lettering in deep red linen and divided each line with varying decorative bands, including the Greek key pattern in blue. Miss Blinkhorn inscribed her sampler across the middle, and began a lovely geometric flower with room for other motifs. She inscribed her sampler again at the bottom, "Annie Elizebeth Blinkhorn 12 years old 22 of July in the year 1869." This second date may indicate that it took Annie two years to finish her sampler.

Worked in linen on linen, this charming sampler is in excellent condition with some very slight darkening to the linen. It has been conservation mounted and is in a molded and painted frame.
