Signed and dated, A. Jacobsen, 1885 (lower right)
Antonio Nicolo Gasparo Jacobsen, American School (1850-1921)

Ship identified, "United States Sloop-of-War Vandalia" (inscribed on verso). Painting shows the U.S. Sloop-of-War "Vandalia" in Provincetown Harbor. A photograph reproduced as Plate VII in U.S. Naval Institute Proceedings, September, 1927, confirms the identity of this vessel. Her cruise in the Pacific in 1858 is recorded in U.S. Naval Institute Proceedings for 1889. "Vandalia" was a member of Commodore Perry's squadron at the opening of Japan. In 1885 she was refitted at Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and was later lost in the great hurricane of March 15-17, 1889, in the harbor of Apia, Samoa. Oil on canvas. Fine condition, one minor patch in sky, minor in-painting to that area.
