Antonio Jacobsen (1850-1921), The Mount Hope; Oil on canvas, 22 x 36 inches; Signed and inscribed lower right; Dated 1902.

The steamer Mount Hope operated from 1888 to 1935. Considered the finest of the excursion steamers that plied Narragansett Bay, she ran daily between Providence, Block Island, and Newport. The ship's three decks included a dramatic central staircase of mahogany, luxuriously appointed staterooms and sitting rooms, and even a barber shop. The Mount Hope was the last of the grand side-wheel steamers to serve Block Island, and was destroyed at dock during the great hurricane of 1938.

Mount Hope represents Jacobsen at his finest. Departing from his usual "broadside" ship portrait, Jacobsen depicts the Mount Hope from an angled view, emphasizing a three dimensionality seen only occasionally in his work.

Abundant details, incuding the figures of dozens of tourists and crew members, gaily inscribed flags, and distant sailing ships and shorelines, elevate this work to the level of Jacobsen's finest paintings. In a masterful turn, the vessel's reflection enlivens the water in unexpected hues of pinks and ivories. In this vibrant canvas, Jacobsen has brought the elements of color, style and composition together to create an exhuberant masterpiece of marine painting.

This painting is one of three known versions of The Mount Hope that Jacobsen painted; two others are in a maritime museum and a private collection. This painting has been in a private New England collection for the last forty years.
