Spectacular Pintail Drake Decoy
Ward Brothers, Crisfield, Maryland, circa 1930
Carved pine, paint
Courtesy of Russ and Karen Goldberger, RJG Antiques
This pristine pintail duck is a wonderful example of a working decoy that exhibits strong folk art qualities; this particular model is referred to as a beaver tail because of its broad tail. Brothers Lem and Steve Ward made their ducks in such a realistic fashion that they referred to them as counterfeits. Because of their skill in rendering decoys, the brothers earned a reputation as some of the finest decoy makers in the country, with five books written about them and a museum established in Salisbury, Maryland, to honor their craft. Their decoys are highly valued in the world.
This decoy is included in Russ Goldbergers new full-color illustrated catalogue of over 135 quality antique decoys, which is available for $10 (P.O. Box 60, Rye, NH 03870). The complete catalogue is also posted on the Goldbergers Web site, www.rjgantiques.com.
