John Keith Russell Antiques, Inc.
Sold to a private collector at the 2003 Philadelphia's Navy Pier Antiques Show
Shaker Three-Slat Ladderback Armchair
Attributed to Freegift Wells (active mid-19th century)
Watervliet, New York, circa 1840
H. 43-1/2"
Courtesy of John Keith Russell Antiques, Inc.
Shaker craftsmanship typically adhered to strict formulas. This possibly unique chair combines a classic Shaker style with innovative features. The unusual upward scroll of the arm along with a three slat back and applied rockers makes it atypical in Shaker workmanship.
With a dark, old varnish over original red paint and probably the original ash seat, this chair is in excellent condition and exhibits no repairs.
